Are skeleton earmolds ok for kids?

    February 26, 2021 /

I feel very passionate that young children and babies should not be fit with open fit/receiver in the ear/receiver in the canal hearing aids without any kind of custom earmold. Are skeleton style earmolds ok for kids? Yes! The most common style of earmolds kids are fit with are full shell earmolds. With kids the most important part of a hearing aid is clear and consistent sound quality.

What’s the difference between hearing aids and cochlear implants? An Analogy

    February 23, 2020 /

I recently posted on my Instagram @ListenWithLindsay about how the latest research is showing us that kids that receive cochlear implants before 1 year old have much better language outcomes. Someone responded saying that they would not put their baby through this because cochlear implants are a luxury. They said to just do hearing aids because they’re much less invasive and reversible.

Books About Hearing Loss for Kids and Adults

    January 20, 2020 /

A friend recently asked for help finding a book about a child getting a cochlear implant. I found a few options and vaguely remembered books I’ve seen throughout the years, but it made me want to make a comprehensive list of as many of the books about hearing loss as I could find. In this list I have books about hearing loss, books about children with hearing loss, books about hearing aids, books about kids getting hearing aids, books with characters that have hearing loss, books with characters that are deaf, books about characters with microtia/atresia, books about characters with unilateral hearing loss, books about using sign language, and on…

What is Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder?

    January 20, 2020 /

I’m so excited for scientific research to crack the code and be able to pinpoint the site of lesion for Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD). We’re getting closer and starting to realize that certain genetic forms of ANSD are likely not going to resolve/improve (ANSD improves in a very very very very small % of patients). Between that and an MRI to determine if there is a thin or absent nerve we can give slightly better guidance about the plan of action. Beyond that there can be a lot of gray area and questions marks. Starting early intervention right away is going to be the best thing you can do!…
